I wrote the following poem and final goodbye for my only brother Wade. He was mentally handicapped and he taught me to be understanding, to love and to be kind. He passed away tragically in 2002. RIP Wade. RIP
Wade John Burton was his name
To those who loved him, our lives will never be the same
Our only brother, mom and dads only son
With him in our family we truly had won.
From Christmas morning, Wade saying 'honey, Santa has been here'
To pretending to be hurt while squeezing out a tear.
Watching him so comfy in our living room
Bobbing away to his favourite tunes
He helped us do the dishes and loved to proclaim
'see me help the girls mom?' was his claim to fame.
He called us all honey, but he knew our names
We saw him suffer, we felt all of his pain.
to honour his life, we are all here today
I smile as I hear him so sweetly say...
'You are my sister and I'm your brother right?'
To him I say 'yes Wade' and I hold him so tight.
Times with him will remain in our heads
God tuck him in gently as he goes to bed.
Thank you to all who entered his world
In a family of gems, he was our pearl!
