End of Journey

You wake to pain, and the smell of healing salves.

A low-ceilinged room. Not a villa — a healer's house in the Physicians' Quarter. Bandages tight around your shoulder and side and thigh.

Lina is asleep in a chair beside your pallet, her neck bare and red where the collar used to be. A free woman's simple tunic now, not a slave's rag. She startles awake when you stir.

"Ortossi!" She grabs your hand. No "Master" now. Just your name, fierce and glad. "You lived. The leech said you wouldn't, but you did."

The door opens. Lady Zoe enters, unveiled for the first time you've seen. She looks tired, older, harder.

"Warrior." She sits. "You bought me time with your blood. While you slept, I purged my house. Three guards — Vosk gold in their coffers. The scarred one you killed was their leader."

She slides a pouch across the blanket. Heavy. Far heavier than twenty gold.

"A hundred. And an offer." Her eyes are sharp. "My House needs a Captain of the Guard who cannot be bought. The Vosk League will try again. Ar itself is rotting from within."

Lina looks at you, holding her breath.

Outside, the morning bells of Ar ring for the opening of the markets. Somewhere, Vuro the baker is alive, his wife safe. Somewhere, the Vosk plot another move.

Zoe waits.

Lina waits.

You push yourself up on your good elbow, wincing, and meet Lady Zoe's eyes.

You have been a sword for hire since you were sixteen. No home. No House. Only the Code, and even that felt thin some nights.

You look at Lina — free Lina — who chose to press her hands to a dying mercenary's wounds instead of running.

You look at Zoe, who knelt in mud to save you.

"I, Ortossi of Ar," you say, voice hoarse but steady, "swear my sword to the House of Zoe. I will guard its walls, its honor, and its people — free and freed — against the Vosk and all enemies. Until death releases me."

Zoe stands and places her hand on your brow — the old rite, rarely used now.

"Then rise, Captain Ortossi of the House of Zoe."

Lina laughs through tears and throws her arms around you, heedless of your bandages. You groan, then laugh too — a real laugh, the first in years.

That afternoon, from your pallet, you dictate your first orders as Captain:

Double the watch. Inspect every guardsman's kit for Vosk coin. And send Vuro the baker a contract — House Zoe will buy all its bread from an honest man, at twice the market price.

Lina brings you paga — unpoisoned, sweet — and sits beside you as the sun sets over the walls of Ar.

The game is not over. The Vosk League is still out there.

But for the first time in a long life of selling your sword, Ortossi of Ar has something worth defending.
