I am a man of Port Kar. I follow the laws and customs of my City, not those of other cities, nor the soft conventions by which civilized men bind themselves. I was not born to bow before the laws of cities beyond the horizon. I am of Port Kar. Its laws govern my hand.
A woman found alone, without guard, without escort, and without the protection of her own city has placed herself within the reach of circumstance. Her caste does not make her sovereign. Her profession does not place her beyond the law of my City.
Men of Port Kar do not ask what other cities would permit. We ask what our own law permits—and having learned that, we do not tremble before the disapproval of strangers.
Let civilized men call it barbarism, we call it common sense. Men of Port Kar has never required their permission to be men; we follow the way nature intended. Men own women.
