The Scroll of Crostofori, Scribe of the Coin

Of Lineage and Legacy

I am Crostofori, son of Crostofo, grandson of Crostofinus, and heir to a line of Scribes that has served the city of Ven'dara for more generations than any living memory can count. The name Crostofori has been inscribed upon the ledgers of this city since before the current Sar took his throne, and my ancestors' hands have recorded the rise and fall of merchants, the passing of property, and the solemn oaths of citizenship for centuries beyond measure.

My father, Crostofo, was the Keeper of the City's Coffers before me. He was a man of quiet dignity and precise quill, respected by the Council and feared by those who sought to obscure their accounts. It was from him that I learned the weight of a silver tarn, the value of a well-kept ledger, and the sacred duty of a Scribe to record truth without favor.

The Call of the Sardar Fairs

When I was but a young man, barely past my first caste apprenticeship, my father sent me to the Sardar Fairs. "A Scribe who has not traded scrolls with scholars from Ar, who has not haggled with a Merchant from Port Kar, who has not disputed a text under the shadow of the Sardar Mountains," he told me, "is a Scribe who knows only half his craft."

I took his words to heart. What began as a journey to the Fairs became something far greater. I traveled the known lands of Gor, from the gleaming towers of Ar to the salt-stained wharves of Port Kar, from the high bridges of Treve to the hidden cities of the southern jungles. I studied the currencies of a dozen cities, learned the weights and measures of a hundred markets, and sat at the feet of the greatest accountants and record-keepers the world has ever known.

I was away for seven years.

Word from Home

The message found me in the city of Turia, where I had been employed as a financial advisor to a wealthy merchant house. It was a simple scroll, sealed with the mark of the Ven'dara Council, and it bore terrible news: my father, Crostofo, had passed from this world. The scroll spoke of a peaceful death, his quill still in hand, his final ledger entry complete. But it also spoke of a request — his final request.

"Let my son Crostofori return to Ven'dara. Let him take up the quill where I have laid it down. Let the name Crostofori continue to serve the Homestone."

I completed my contracts in Turia, settled my affairs, and made the long journey north. I did not travel quickly, for I had much to consider. I had been away so long that I scarcely remembered the faces of the Council, the sound of the city bells, or the feel of the Homestone's heat upon my skin.

But now I am returned.

The State of the Family Holdings

Upon my arrival, I found my family's old scribal offices in good repair, thanks to the kindness of the Council and the diligence of a few trusted apprentices who had kept the business running in my absence. The ledgers were orderly, the accounts balanced, and the loyalty of the staff was a comfort to my weary soul.

However, much has changed in Ven'dara since I departed. New buildings have risen, new laws have been written, and new faces occupy seats of power that were once familiar to me. I am, in many ways, a stranger in my own home city.

But I am a Crostofori. The blood of Scribes runs in my veins. I have traveled the world and returned to the place where my story began. I come not as a conqueror, nor as a supplicant, but as a servant of the city I call home.

A Humble Return

I do not presume to immediately reclaim my father's title as Keeper of the City's Coffers. I must prove myself anew to the Sar and the Council. I must earn the trust of citizens who have never known my name. I must show that the years away have not diminished my skill, but rather sharpened it.

I have brought with me a collection of rare scrolls, texts on accounting from distant cities, and knowledge of trade routes and currency exchange that I hope will benefit Ven'dara. I have also brought my quill, my ink, and my father's old ledger, which he kept until his final day. It is my most cherished possession.

A Request for Patience

I ask only for patience and understanding as I reacquaint myself with the customs and laws of this city. I have been gone a long time, and Gor has a way of changing even when the mountains remain still. If I seem uncertain, forgive me. If I ask questions that seem foolish, remember that I am a returning son, not a stranger.

Ven'dara is my home. The Homestone is my heart. And I am Crostofori, Scribe of the Coin, come at last to fulfill the legacy of my fathers.
